Injured and Writing

I've injured myself once again. I have lumbar spinal stenosis. I don't want to explain it because it takes forever, but its sorta bad. This means I will probably have physical therapy until it goes away. I find out this morning what exactly is causing it. It may be a herniated disk or a sprain.

Writing with Writer's Block

Okay first thing when you are writing with writer's block is do not get frustrated. I have been there and all that frustration does is make the writers block worse. I would suggest that you do something to get your mind off of writing for a little while like watching a movie you haven't seen, play games or even take a nice long bubble bath. If that doesn't work try listening to different types of musics because sometimes the lyrics will give you a little inspiration. If that still doesn't work take a day long break from writing at all.

Headache's - 10:16 pm

Well one of the worst things that could possibly happen to a writer when they are writing is to get a headache because it makes it almost impossible to think about anything at all. Well I got lucky tonight because I have a migraine headache. I am going to try to take a little nap to get rid of it for now. See you when I get up.

My Story Online - 3:37 pm

I have made a website with my story on it. I haven't updated it in a while so it will be really short right now. I plan to update it tonight. Also on the story page below the story is a comment box. Please send me comments on my work. I usually don't get much done because I try to make my stories with a lot of quality first before I had more quantity. Busy this afternoon and tomorrow - 8:22 am

Well, today at 2pm i will be logging off of everything that i am usually on so i will be absent for a while. then tomorrow i won't even get on the Internet till 6 pm at the earliest because i am going to islander days at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. I just got accepted there so I have to go to this. I will see you when i get back.

Islander Day Tomorrow - 8:18 pm

Well tomorrow my mom and I are going to Islander Days over at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi. I just got accepted their a week or two ago so I though I better go to the soonest one so I could get a tour of the school and see all the different clubs and groups that they offer. Best of all we don't have to worry about making breakfast or what we will eat for lunch because they are providing food. We have to get up pretty early tomorrow since we live 30 minutes away from campus and check in starts at 8 am. Then we will do some stuff, eat lunch, do some more stuff and finally leave campus around 5pm. It will be a very hectic day for me and my mom.

Yesterday - 11:11 am

Well yesterday was a blast. I learned a lot about the college that I am going to be attending this spring. I still have to learn my way around but I know how to get to a few places already so I will be ahead of the game when I start. I think I might set up a private tour of the campus before school starts so i will know where all my classes are so i don't get lost on the first day of school. The food there is okay, its not horrible and its not great. The class rooms are small so i will be able to see everything.

Word Count - 6:50pm

I am having trouble reaching my word counts goals. I can't seem to get over the fact of my work not having any real quality, just quantity. I have always worked on writing quality stories and it is kind of hindering my work count. I have been trying to add at least 500 words to my word count every day but I usually end up editing my story. My word count goal for today is 5,000, but i am only at a little over 2500 words. If you have any thing like this happen to you before please help me.

Write-A-Thon - 7pm

I can't wait until this Saturday. I am totally pumped. I hope that we get at least 6 people to come. Hopefully it will help me with my word count and i will get to 25,000 words. Well I have to get back to writing my story. TTYL.

Sick - 9:42pm

Well I am headed off to bed. I am still feeling pretty bad. I am sorry that I won't be able to attend the write-a-thon tomorrow, but I just don't feel well enough to. I hope that everyone has fun. If you take pictures please post them in the photo gallery on here. I can't wait to find out if I have gallbladder disease or not. I will update you guys when I know something. I probably won't be able to finish out this month with more than 10,000 words. It is just to hard to concentrate on writing when I am in so much pain.

Feeling Better - 8:33pm

I am feeling better. I still haven't written that much on my novel, but I promise tomorrow that i will add at least 1000 words to my story. I will have plenty of time to write. Also an update on my gallbladder situation. Tomorrow at 10pm I will begin to fast until after I get a sonogram done on Wednesday at 9 am. After that i will eat and wait for the results to see if I actually have gallbladder disease or not.

Sick (again) - 8:12pm

I think I have bronchitis. I have had it before and it feels just like the previous time. I am going to the doctor tomorrow to get checked out. I am hoping he will have my results in as well. I do have a fever so I haven't felt like doing much but watching movies. Well time to get back to my movie.

Visualize
There's a writing exercise that i do with my writing buddies. It starts with them closing their eyes and clearing their mind. Then I ask just a few prodding questions about what they see and what the feeling of the scene is. "And then what happens?" or "Describe that to me." "That's interesting... go on." Try to imagine that your inner editor or your muse is a psychiatrist and you are on the couch in hypnosis.

Relax, it's just a rough draft.
Just remember that NaNoWriMo is one big rough draft and that once you get to do other drafts they will be good and working toward perfection. For now this is just like notes to yourself about what you want to write later.

Question Your Muse
Write down whatever questions you have about your story such as "Why would the character go on this adventure in the first place?" Then without giving yourself a chance to think about it answer your question with the first thing that comes to mind. "Because it would be a really fun thing to do and the reader would love it." Then keep going back and forth. "But isn't that a feeble motivation to do something so dangerous?" "yeah so what?"...etc I've found it's a great way to work out your blocks.

Timed writing
You'd be amazed how much it helps to commit to 10 min of non stop writing per day. You have to take the words "non stop" seriously. No talking. No stopping your pen or fingers from typing.

Social writing
One of the great things about NaNo is that you have a team like any other sport that pushes you and praises you when you put in a good practice. After all the game is won by every good practice. The final score is just something to print in the sports page. Make a point of relying on this team and giving back to it. Challenge each other with writing prompts and timed writing. Post encouragement to the two sites. Blog your frustrations out because it helps us all when we can relate. Let us know if you'll be at a coffee shop on a certain day so we can join you. And of course our team mascots the guilt monkeys will be sure to razz you if you let them down.

Writing Prompts
Look up writing prompts online or make some up yourself and post them to the writing prompts page on this site. One day when I was struggling to meet my word quota my sister started calling out random words to see if I could fit them into the current scene. You never know until you've tried it how fun it is and how imaginative you can get while still making it work for your story. In fact very often it turns out to be that missing piece of your plot that makes everything come together. Don't reject the ones that don't fit your story because those are the best at limbering up your imagination. If you're not writing a romance but the prompt is "your character falls in love" you may have them literally falling into a box of foam hearts.

Prepare before November
- Get yourself jazzed up
- Outline outline outline! Sure "blank page" writers are welcome but just be warned that it can be more difficult. At least know your characters and settings well.
- Read or re-read lots of novels, the kind you consider a guilty pleasure maybe, or the kind you want to model your style after.
- Physical practice - Download Stamina or any free typing software you can find. I have a theory that the feel of writing can stimulate your creativity. If you prefer handwriting then practice that as well.
- Prep your family and friends. Let them know it's important to you and you will need to take time on it.
- Figure out your schedule. Pick a time when you can devote 15 min to an hour each day. Do you have more time on the weekends? Are you a graveyard worker? Having a set time can keep you from procrastinating.

Character Naming

Interesting article from a baby naming site. Most of it is insightful but I strongly disagree with tip #2 which suggests that your character's name should be related to what they do. Unless you are writing a comedy I would advise that you only do that if it were a nick name. Parents may name their kids what they hope they will one day be but what are the odds of that working out? To quote my favorite line from Spider Man 2 "Guy named Otto Octavius winds up with eight limbs. Four mechanical arms welded right onto his body. What are the odds? " There are non comedic exceptions. Maybe the character is some sort of chosen one so they really do know what he will be when he grows up.

Personally I think a character's name reflects more on who their parents(or namers) were. This is a good way to add back history. Maybe you have a woman whose parents desperately wanted her to be a little princess but she grew up to be a marine. So everyone calls her by her surname "Duffy". That reveals a lot about parent and child in one small detail.

Planning Your Novel
Its not always that easy to plan out what your going to write the month before. All you need is a small set of guidelines on how to plan out your novel. A lot of guidelines to doing this can be found on the web simply by searching them and most are free to use. An example of one is the Snowflake Method. It takes you completely through how to write a novel which can really help when your just starting out. If you follow it you may just find yourself completeing NaNoWriMo this year.

Write your name followed by a short section of the story. The next participant will add another section to the story. The rules will be very lose so don't worry about taking too many turns or going out of turn. The only rule is there should be at least one section by someone else before you add your next contribution. On with the story.

"The Haunting of WriMo House"

Philosopher -

Ian and Clay approached the old house on the outskirts of town. The lawn was dry and over grown but aside from that they could see that it was once a charming place not long ago. It was done in a poor man's version of Victorian architecture. Clay pushed through the small wooden fence and looked around at the unkempt yard. "I don't know. It's not that spooky." He tightened his jacket. "Although I'm sure it's drafty enough to be a haunted house."

"Yeah now that I think about it, maybe this isn't a great write in spot." Ian said. "The electricity is shut off. The outlets won't work."

"Yeah that could be a problem. Oh you know what? My cousin's got one of those portable generators. Maybe she'll let us borrow it."

"I don't know it might be a lot of trouble. But I'm really married to the idea of a write in at a real haunted house." Clay laughed but Ian kept a straight face. "I'm serious." Ian said. "I think that guy's ghost is still here."

"Oh yeah, how did he die?"

"He was a wrimo. He wrote himself to death."

Texas Per Person Word Count Shootout

What is it? A competition among the Texas regions to see which one has the highest word count when averaged among participants. To be held during NaNo 09. Results announced on Dec 1 2009. How are results calculated? The total word count for the region after Nov 30 is divided by the number of "active participants" for that region. 1000 total words for region / 10 active participants = 100 words per person The Texas region with the highest PPWC wins. What is an "active participant"? An active participant has to have submitted any word count greater than zero for THIS YEAR. Many people signed up years ago have haven't submitted a count since then. Why are results calculated that way? Many cities have an unfair advantage when it comes to over all word count because they have a large population. This competition focuses on dedication rather than head count. Example: Region 1 may have 10 APs(active participants) and 1000 words total Region 2 may have 100 APs and 1000 words total The PPWC for Region 1 is 100 words and the PPWC for Region 2 is 10 words. Region 1 would be the winner. How can we keep track of who is in the lead? http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/wordcount_stats Watch the leader board and sort by average. What does the winning region receive? That region will be declared "NaNoWriMo Capitol of Texas 2009" They will be given a link to download a paper trophy. I had a great feeling driving home today, you know one of those 'birds singing-sunshinging' kind of days. On this drive home it hit me, "That new coffee shop on Alameda would be a perfect place to meet for NaNo." I know I changed location on my WriMo's last year but in my defence well this place didn't exist last year. It's the only coffee spot I know that's open until midnight most days and 1am least days.

I know I'm two months early but I learned my lesson last year about not deciding on a place early.

Since my wrimo's were so awesome at pounding out word counts last year I'm getting a bit superstitious about not changing anything from last year. So maybe we should stick with the Greenwood library.

I think it was the sense of competition that did the trick. We all wanted to beat Houston in the "per person" word count. The guilt monkeys would like me to add that they were especially active last November. Some of them were downing energy shots to keep you folks awake at night wondering if your characters are facing enough danger.

I was chatting with a friend about my premature nano enthusiasm and she said

remind me what it is again?
like, details. I know it's writing.
Philosopher says:
it's writing 50k words in 30 days
of anything creative
should look like a novel but it's kind of like a pottery class for 5 yr olds where the project usually doesn't resemble what it's supposed to be.

I love thinking of NaNo this way. It's like an arts and crafts classroom where anything you do is brilliant. Let's all put on our over sized aprons and get messy!
